Since ancient times, Monaco has always been at the crossroads of history. It first obtained its sovereignty and recognition from major European countries under the able leadership of the Grimaldi dynasty, which conquered the Principality in 1297. A reason for the maintenance of this sovereignty today can be identified in the careful strategy of its Princes that have always aligned the interests of the Principality with that of the great powers while never allowing intervention into its local affairs. Furthermore, throughout the centuries Monaco never entered into conflict. Its status as a sovereign State was recognized by the 1815 Vienna Treaty, the 1919 Treaty of Versailles and with the bilateral treaties signed with France of 1641, 1851, 1918 and 2002. Today the Principality enjoys full sovereignty, as defined by international law, and is a member of most international organizations.Sr Consultant, Genentech 2007 – 2008
